The above picture is NOT from the recent earthquake. It was taken from a site with statistics on Haiti from 1989.
When this whole earthquake catastrophe occurred in Haiti it prompted an inquiry into the the predominant religion of Haiti. I have to admit Haiti rarely crosses my mind, so before I go all prayerful, I need to know something about the people I'm to pray for. The inquiry made my prayers be a bit different (I expect) than the average everyday xtian joe who's out there beating the streets for people to join them in prayer over the situation.
In an Internet search I happened upon a site with information about Haiti. This site is also where the above picture was acquired. There I found that the religion of Haiti is Voodoo mixed with Roman Catholicism. Then, since this site is from 1989, I looked for a more recent survey of the predominant religion/culture of Haiti. Found a Canadian site with 'quick facts' about Haiti from around 2006, and which seems to validate that the country has remained pretty much the same since 1989. Generally, you can do a search yourself, and after perusing all the information out there I expect you would come to the conclusion that Haiti's main religion is Voodoo, with a thin vernier of Roman Catholicism, and some Protestantism which in reality caved to the RC version of xtians, and so is ultimately, in the end, just Roman Catholicism with a thin vernier of Protestantism. Seriously, these people might as well have put up an antenna and begged God to thrown down judgement upon them.
Then I was reminded of Katrina, and how it devastated an area of the United States that has a Haitian, Creole, Roman Catholic mixed with Voodoo society as its main population. Coincidence? I don't think so.
Should we pray for these people in a physical sense? Yes. But mostly my prayer now is that the survivors of this dreadful destruction might realize that they have neglected the one true God of the universe. My prayer is that God sends, or better yet already has, those with the words of the gospel situated in places to feed the people in both a physical AND spiritual sense. People to offer the clean water of life as well as the water of the body. My prayer is that they don't try to put their culture back together and resume their sinful ways, as Louisiana has done. My prayer is that God changes their hearts. I know that those who are His will not be lost regardless, but I also know that His regenerate servants should have enough discernment to know what they REALLY should be praying for.
Amen
